Ethnicity

In 2022, CMI is celebrating our 75th anniversary. To mark the occasion we are exploring what best practice looks like in modern management by looking at the barriers that remain to inclusive practice and maximising talent in the workplace, and how - as managers and leaders, we can take steps to overcome these barriers.

One of the themes we are exploring is ethnicity in the workplace.

The workplace in review: Ethnicity

A lack of diversity in management and leadership positions is a longstanding problem in the UK. Diverse ethnic groups make up 13% of the UK working population and 12% of UK managers but these percentages mask large differences between different ethnic groups.

Government action to close gaps has been limited but employers also need to be doing more.

We know there are examples of good practice but CMI research shows a clear gap between the warm words and lukewarm actions of managers and leaders.

So what needs to change?

We are carefully listening to our community as we aim to develop race equity fluency among managers and organisations. We encourage members to share their feedback on the terminology we use to raceequity@managers.org.uk
