The rise of artificial intelligence (AI), increased demand for digital integration, a push toward sustainability and evolving client expectations – these are just some of the trends independent consultants can expect in 2025.

And, according to the experts we spoke to, staying agile, innovative and focused on one’s unique value proposition will be key strategies for success.

AI: opportunity and threat

AI continues to advance rapidly, altering not only the operations of client organisations, but also the competitive landscape for consultants.

“AI and its increasing use by clients and competitors is both an opportunity and a threat,” says Paul Kelly ChMC FIC, owner and principal consultant at Adluceo Consulting. For consultants, AI offers new ways to enhance service offerings and provide data-driven insights, but it also brings challenges, as AI tools may replace certain consulting skills.

To adapt, Paul urges consultants to deepen their understanding of AI. By helping clients integrate AI responsibly and ethically, consultants can position themselves as trusted advisers in navigating this complex technology.

“Helping clients to navigate the use of AI is essential, and adopting it where it makes sense can produce better outcomes,” he says.

Consultants with specialist skills in digital transformation and AI adoption stand to benefit from this trend, says Tim Kaner, founder of Kancha Consulting – although it may pose a risk for those whose skill sets overlap with AI capabilities. The key, he advises, is to identify your “point of difference”, focusing on areas where human expertise cannot be easily replicated by AI tools.
