Britain may have left the EU, but we remain very much part of the international community. And changes in the UK workplace still have ripples far beyond these shores. Slovakia’s national TV network, RTVS, interviewed Anthony Painter, CMI’s director of policy and external affairs, about CMI’s recent research into redundancies and hiring freezes in the UK [listen from 33:00]. The study also gained attention in China, Bulgaria, Singapore and Romania

Slovakia also took a keen interest in CMI’s research into accidental managers (via Trend). Back in the UK, the findings were also mentioned in a Business Leader interview with former CMI president Lord Mark Price

Continuing the global theme, Ann Francke OBE, CMI’s chief executive, attended London Tech Week, the global conference of technology, where she joined a panel to discuss the impact of technology on leadership – and what good leadership looks like.

Ann’s regular column in The Times continues to shed light on that issue too. Her recent piece offering six tips for becoming a better manager drew a big response from the CMI community, who weren’t shy in volunteering suggestions of their own.

Anyone looking for better management may soon be turning to the NHS. The organisation’s chief executive, Amanda Pritchard, announced during the NHS Confederation Expo 2024 that it’s working with CMI in developing a new framework for all managers and leaders in the health service.

More immediately, this week’s newsletter is full of leadership tips. You can learn how to deal with microaggressions and plug gaps in your EDI strategy, as well as getting expert advice on hybrid working and several key lessons in leadership, success and failure from one distinguished CMI member’s storied career.

Buoyed by this talk of quality management? Why not shine a light on your own achievements, or those of your peers, with the CMI Awards of Excellence. The window for nominations remains open for a couple more weeks. So keep those names coming! Who knows, it may be a first step towards global renown…

And don’t forget – 19 June sees the launch event for Management Publication of the Year 2024, hosted by the Chartered Association of Business Schools and the British Academy of Management. Submit your nomination here.Best,

Ian
