Find out how

There’s a lot to report, so let’s crack on.

CMI’s chief executive Ann Francke OBE was in Malaysia this week, attending the Elevating Leadership for Human Sustainability event hosted by CMI Malaysia and Sunway University. The event explored the art of effective leadership and the value of being a Chartered Manager, and was covered by Business Today. Ann was also quoted in a Bernama article discussing AI’s role in driving economic growth in the country. A huge thanks to our hosts, speakers and moderators – and a shout-out to the vice chancellor of the University of Huddersfield, Bob Cryan, who changed his travel plans to attend the event.

Ann was also making waves in The Times this week. Her column (subscription required) on managing long-term sick leave prompted a huge debate. She also shared her top tips on “How to become a better manager” – do you agree with her…?

CMI Management Publication of the Year

Breaking news! CMI, the Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS) and the British Academy of Management (BAM) launched a new nationwide award that aims to recognise outstanding work that brings fresh thinking to some of the UK’s most pressing challenges.

Do you have or know of a research-based publication in the UK – including books, ebooks, podcast series, blog series and film – that has the potential to influence practice? If so, here’s the link to nominate it for this prestigious award. Hashtag: #MPOTY

We are delighted to launch the awards in association with The British Library, who will host an event to announce the winner in February 2025 🌟

Nominations close on 5 July 2024.

Diversity and accidental managers

In an article in People Management about management training, CMI’s director of policy Anthony Painter stated that skilled managers help prevent toxic behaviours, maximise team potential and ultimately drive organisational performance. Our Better Managers research was also featured in a number of publications including Start Your Business, HR Professionals (Greece), Training Industry, Blogarama and Make a Difference.

CMI’s Ethnicity in the Workplace paper was quoted extensively in an Authority Magazine article highlighting the need for ethnic equality in the workplace.

Wellbeing days

Personnel Today recently cited CMI research showing that 62% of employees believe their employers aren’t doing enough to address workplace stress, leading one in three employees to consider leaving due to ineffective management.

So, recently the CMI team took a well-deserved day off to relax, reflect and recharge. We loved seeing the amazing photos our colleagues took, showcasing their wellbeing day adventures – including dog walks, spa days and pottery painting!

Enter a colleague – or yourself – for a CMI Award!
