One of the most common problems faced by ‘accidental’ managers (those promoted with no formal training) is the ability to motivate others to do their best work. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink, right?

Well, while that’s technically true, it’s a manager’s responsibility to be able to sell it to them and as with any sales pitch, the single most vital key to success is understanding their needs.
